Germany – Portugal 09.06.2012

One of the title contenders, Germany will kick off their Euro 2012 campaign tonight at L’viv Arena in Ukraine in what should be the first derby game of this year’s competition.

After making the podium at the last three major tournaments, the Germans are now determined to go one step further and finally win their first major title after 1996. Following a perfect Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, which saw them win all 10 qualifiers in what was a pretty difficult group, die Mannschaft have somewhat struggled in friendlies, but they should be on top of their game once the tournament starts.
Also hoping to get to a good start to this competition will be Portugal, who has been underperforming in the last couple of years and it’s no wonder not too many people believe they will be one of the two sides to qualify from the group of death. The Selecao struggled throughout the qualifiers and managed to make it to the tournament finals after a play-off win over Bosnia-Hercegovina. Their warm-up games have been a major disappointment as well, with goalless draws against Poland and FYR Macedonia, followed by a 3-1 home defeat against Turkey in their final game before the Euro 2012.

Germany have proven themselves as one of the best teams in Europe, as well as world, and we can expect them to perform well. Portugal on the other hand has plenty of talent, but they just weren’t able to make any significant results in the past couple of big tournaments. This could be their chance. Both squads have plenty of star players and both play offensively, therefor we should see plenty of chances and consequently – goals.
