Siena – Inter Milan 03.02.2013

Siena are six points adrift of safety after losing to Udinese, meaning they have no choice but to try and win this match.

Inter, on the other hand, are doing well at the moment, but they desperately need to rediscover their away form if they are to mount a serious top 3 challenge.

Siena were always going to be on the main candidates for the drop after they were slapped with a six-point penalty for their involvement in a match-fixing scandal. The team, nonetheless, enjoyed a pretty good start to the league campaign, hinting they might just be able to survive this season, but their promising run of results was short-lived. Robur slipped to rock bottom after losing six straight Serie A fixtures and not even a win over Sampdoria helped their cause a great deal. Having lost to Udinese at the weekend, Siena now sit six points behind safety, meaning the hosts will be under big pressure in the match against Inter. Team’s home record is also quite disappointing, given they picked up just one point from five home fixtures against top table sides in Serie A, losing to Roma, Catania and Napoli before beating Sampdoria last time out.

Considering all the problems young coach Andrea Stramaccioni has faced this season, he has got to be congratulated for leading Inter to the fourth place in the standings. Numerous changes to the playing squad, important absentees and hectic schedule were things the Neroazzurri had to contend with, but they did very well to remain in the race for Champions League places. The great strength in depth is certainly helping Inter at the time when several star players are missing, while new players Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Ezequiel Schelotto and Mateo Kovacic are expected to further increase competition for places. Inter go into this match hoping to make amends for the 2-2 draw with Torino and desperate to finally rediscover the away form that served them so well at the start of the season. After winning first six away games in Serie A, the Neroazzurri failed to win any of their next five, but the match against rock-bottom Siena should be a perfect opportunity to return to winning ways.
